What is the emerald ash borer (EAB)?
The emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle species originating from Asia that targets ash trees. While harmless in its native habitat, it poses a severe threat to ash trees in other regions, often leading to their death if left untreated. The emerald ash borer was first detected in Boulder in September 2013. We encourage you to contact us if you have ash trees on your property. Our team can assess your trees and provide options to mitigate the impact of these insects on your landscape.
What trees are affected?
The emerald ash borer affects all species of true ash trees. It's important to note that mountain ash, despite its name, is not a true ash species and is therefore not susceptible to emerald ash borer infestation.
Should all ash trees be treated?
At present, we recommend an annual application of systemic insecticide for all high-value ash trees. This treatment helps protect the trees from initial EAB attacks. It's important to note that treatment effectiveness can vary based on factors such as tree size, proximity to known EAB activity, tree location, overall tree health, soil moisture, and the level of insect pressure in the area. When should I start treating my tree?
Ash trees require annual treatment throughout their lifespan to maintain protection against EAB. Property owners need to decide whether to treat their ash trees or opt for removal and replacement. If you choose to treat your trees, we recommend contacting us as soon as possible to schedule the service. Timing is crucial for effective control. Our arborists are available to discuss treatment options, timing, associated costs, and address any other questions you may have.If my tree is already treated for an ash borer, will I be protected against EAB?
The treatment you may currently have for 'Ash Borer' is specifically for Lilac-Ash Borers, which is a different pest. EAB requires a different treatment approach. However, some treatments for larger trees can effectively control both pests. Is there anything else I can do to help my ash trees survive?
Maintaining overall tree health is crucial, as healthier trees generally respond more favorably to EAB treatment programs. We strongly recommend implementing an annual nutrient program for your ash trees. This program is designed to enhance metabolic function, root health, and root vigor, rather than promoting rapid growth. Additionally, we advise supplemental watering during winter months and peak summer heat. Our hydration program incorporates wetting agents and natural extracts to improve water absorption and retention in the soil. If your ash trees are not currently on a nutrient program, please contact us for pricing information. How much will it cost?
The cost for EAB treatment is determined by the tree's diameter and the specific treatment options chosen. We offer free, no-obligation estimates and would be happy to discuss the various treatment options available for your ash trees.
